The Democratic nominee for the State House 95th District seat, Stacy Erwin Oakes, meets legal residency requirements, according to Saginaw City Clerk’s records.

She is registered to vote at her mother’s address of 3309 Carter near Saginaw High School, records show. However records also show that she and her husband own property in Lansing, where she works as an Assistant Attorney General.

Review Magazine called Erwin Oakes repeatedly to inquire about residency, with no response. She did not submit responses for Review’s pre-election candidate forum.

"Residency, or alleged lack of residency, is a frequent complaint that we hear about in elections,” says Ken Silfven, a spokesman for the Michigan Department of State.  “If someone is registered to vote within the district, there is no law that says you must spend a certain amount of time at your stated residence.”

Stacy Erwin Oakes defeated Joyce Seals, Greg Dietrich and Pamela Pugh Smith to become the Democratic nominee to face Republican Sarge Harvey in November for the 95th District seat that was made vacant by the departure of Andy Coulouris.

Her campaign website, www.erwinoakes4staterep.com, provides a candidate profile that begins, “Stacy Erwin Oakes is a Saginaw resident and proud product of the Saginaw Public School system.”

The candidate profile proceeds to note that she is a Michigan State University College of Law graduate who formerly worked for the Michigan Department of Civil Rights and now serves as an Assistant Attorney General.

Her online profile concludes, “Stacy is married to Michael Oakes and they have two children, Michael II and Kingston. The family worships at New Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church.”
