The University of Michigan moved to 4-0 in its non-conference schedule with a 28-7 victory over San Diego State University. The Aztecs came into the game with 3-0 record and was Brady Hoke's former school before he accepted the University of Michigan Head Coach position. Playing in front of 110,707 fans under cloudy skies in Ann Arbor the Wolverines jumped out to a 21-0 lead at halftime.
Michigan quarterback Denard Robinson scored the Wolverines first 3 touchdowns in the first half on 3 runs. Robinson finished the day with 200 yards on 21 carries. Running back Vincent Smith scored the other Wolverine touchdown in the fourth quarter on 7 yard run to make the final score 28-7. Denard Robinson had a so-so day passing completing 8 of 17 passes for 93 yards and often threw on the run. Michigan's defense rose to the occasion again by allowing only 10 points in the last two games.
The Big Ten Conference schedule starts now with the Wolverines facing the Minnesota Golden Gophers on October 1, 2011. The Gophers are lead by former Saginaw Valley State University Head Coach Jerry Kill who is struggling in the early part of the season with a 1-3 record. Coach Kill has also suffered a seizure this season during a game and had to leave the field. This game and the following week at Northwestern will conclude the easy part of the Michigan 2011 schedule. The Wolverines then will face in state rival Michigan State in East Lansing on October 15th.
Brady Hoke has the Wolverines moving in the right direction so far but the feeling in the air is the Wolverines still lack something that will be necessary to do well in the Big Ten season. But having a 4-0 record starts to build confidence in the players. Starting quarterback Denard Robinson knows that his passing game will have to improve in order for the Wolverines to win a Big Ten Championship and appear in a meaningful Bowl Game at the end of the season.
Michigan could easily start the season 8-0 before they really run into any type of test on the road. I see the Wolverines defeating the University of Minnesota this week and then going to Evanston and beating Northwestern University at their place going to 7-0. The tough test will come in East Lansing on October 15, 2011 against the MSU Spartans who could be 3-2 facing the Wolverines. The Spartans take on the Ohio State Buckeyes this week in Columbus, Ohio and then having a week off before facing the Wolverines. I don't have the Wolverines going undefeated this season but could finish 9-3 or 10-2.
